The more links that exist that are pointing to your web site the more popular your website is deemed to be. And it is this popularity that makes your website interesting to the search engines and what makes them want to selection you.
Therefore, to get listed on Google quickly (and the other search engines), you need a few links in from ‘authority’ web-sites. As a website designer I might do this by linking from my own web site to a customer’s new site and virtually always see them listed in excess of the weekend. But, if this is your first and only website, that is not an option.
If you have friends who have sites then you might ask them for a link to your website. For getting your web site listed, it is not really worth going to links directories and so on as their link popularity with the search engines is too low.
